Philosophy and Goals

Our educational Philosophy

The parents and teachers of Evergreen Independent school are committed to a philosophy that endeavours to develop the full potential of each child. This includes striving to meet the child's intellectual, emotional, social, physical, aesthetic and language development needs.

WE BELIEVE:

  • that meeting the needs of each child is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
  • that children develop in different ways at different rates in different directions. We strive to instruct children in ways that best fit their individual learning styles.
OUR GOALS:
The staff and parents of Evergreen Independent School work together to provide a school community where children can develop to their fullest potential: cooperation, empathy, self responsibility and positive self esteem.
  • We encourage children to develop a love of learning; Evergreen's atmosphere is one of safety, trust, respect and inclusiveness. Children enjoy school: it is fun and exciting. The children are encouraged and challenged to think, explore and satisfy their curiosity.
  • We help children become skilful problem solvers; We rely on integration and application of information rather than rote learning. Our students are taught to use their imagination in order to become problem solvers and independent thinkers.
  • We allow children to develop self confidence and respect: Our students are taught to become self-motivated and responsible, as well as accepting and respectful of others. Our students excel at leading and cooperating in groups.
  • We foster creativity; We encourage the inherent creativity in all students. We want our children to participate enthusiastically in whatever interests them.
  • We encourage community involvement; The children are taught to embrace and become active in their local and global communities.
  • We seek academic excellence: Evergreen ensures the children master the BC school curriculum and have a strong academic foundation.

APPLICATION: To achieve the goals set forth in the school philosophy we practise the following:

  • Parental involvement: the skills, love and involvement of Evergreen's parents in their child's learning are key to meeting our goals for a cooperative learning community.
  • Small class size: At Evergreen, every child is guaranteed individualized attention. Our small class size allows us to teach to children s specific needs. As a result, kids are able to get the maximum time and effort from their teacher. Small class size allows an inclusive, positive atmosphere where the children feel safe and free to be their authentic selves. The students are listened to with respect and encouraged to state their opinion.
  • Family groupings: Family groupings are organized so that the students of different chronological ages can be placed in broad academic and social settings for a wide range of learning opportunities.
  • Theme teaching: An integrated approach with the use of themes is a stimulating, enjoyable and challenging process that encompasses the goals listed above.
  • Experiential learning: Field trips, hands-on learning and a rich and varied environment all encourages each child to become an active participant in his or her own learning process.

BOTTOM LINE: Everyone at Evergreen celebrates learning. We are all part of a process to become more skilled students, parents, teachers and community members.
